MVHS hosted the first 2017 pep-rally on January 20 in the gym. The event kicked off with the presentation of the colors followed by the national anthem sung by senior Kassandra Cisneros.

Still shaking from the nerves, Cisneros walked to the bleachers to join the rest of the senior class.

“I was really nervous, but really exhilarated,” she said, “I was feeling a little iffy because of Trump’s inauguration today but my brother’s in the army so I felt like I did it for him.”

Despite her nervousness, Cisneros maintained a smile.

This was one of the first times many of her peers have heard her sing.

“I’ve only heard her sing once before and it was at the talent show,” Itzelth Gamboa, senior, said. “I know it’s something hard to sing and she did it beautifully. I was amazed.”

The winter pep rally serves as an opportunity to honor the winter sports, such as water polo, basketball, wrestling, and soccer.

“It was nice to be recognized,” Randy Jimenez, junior, said.

Sticking to tradition, both pep rallies closed with the class yell, in which Mr. Benitez leads each grade level as they yell to represent their graduating class.

Diana Lemus, junior, was disappointed with her class yell.

“There was hardly any juniors,” Lemus said. “Our side was dead. Our class yell was booboo.”

Principal Brown was there overseeing the event and joined in at the end, leading students with the traditional Viking pride chant.

“I think our students have a positive climate and our students come together with their class.” Brown said.

Participating and attending both pep-rallies, Jimenez was content of the overall outcome.

“The pep rally was great. It had lots of excitement and was very entertaining.” Jimenez said. “The themes were well thought of and the games were fun to watch.”
