The Importance of Self-Love

Nia Beckford, Staff Writer

Growing up, we’re always told we need self-love but never educated about it. But what is it really? Self-love is acceptance, positivity, support, appreciation, nurture, kindness, empathy, and compassion within and a deep soul connection beyond the body and mind. According to research from Dr. Joe Rubino, it is estimated that 85 percent of Americans suffer from low self-esteem.

Self-love is the foundation of all success. Whether you desire to have a loving relationship, good health, or more abundance it all begins with how you really feel about yourself. Self-love and acceptance are essential to improving your way of life.

Why is it important? The absence of self-love can lead to low self-esteem, which means it can reduce the quality of a person’s life in many different ways. Constant self-criticism can lead to persistent feelings of sadness, depression, anxiety, anger, shame, or guilt. Most of the time a person with low self-esteem may feel angry and belittle other people.

Self-love means having a high regard for your own well-being and happiness. Self-love is also taking care of your own needs and not sacrificing your well-being to please others. Sometimes by taking care of ourselves means having days to rejuvenate or to recollect ourselves, Which is very important for our mental health.

“Faced with high-stress levels among adolescents and a mental health crisis that includes worsening suicide rates, some states are now allowing students to declare a mental health day.”

Finding self-love doesn’t just simply happen overnight, it is a process that you can only determine how long it would take. Here are the 6 steps to self-love that helped me when I was trying to gain/find self-love:

  1. Make peace with your insecurities. Reflect on the good and not the bad. Your mind is your Enemy.
  2. Focus on positive self-talk. Say positive affirmations.
  3. Let go of the negative (people, habits of yours, environment, etc.)
  4. It’s hard to let go of things we’ve had for a while even if it’s bad for us.
  5. Take care of your need.
  6.  Do things that make you feel good. Do what you want to do without thinking of others’ opinions.

Because at the end of the day it’s your life and trust who you are and why you’re doing the things that you’re doing.

It’s really important for everyone to have self-love. It doesn’t matter who they are, and because everyone needs positive thinking and doing and to get that fully you need self-love.
