ASB hosted an Academic Idol Assembly to reward students who’ve received a 3.0 or higher in the second semester during the 2017-2018 school year.

This year the event was  divided. Students who received a 3.0 or higher were rewarded with ice cream, and those who received a 4.0 or higher were rewarded with pizza in the MPR and the usual games that all classes get to participate in.

ASB director, Mrs. Gil de Montes, addresses the two groups being separated she says, “ we wanted to show that there’s a difference between the amount of effort that was put in, so the 4.0’s get pizza.” Gil de Montes said, “The 3.0’s, we still wanted to do something really nice for them, it was my understanding that before the 3.0’s really didn’t get recognized, they just sat in the gym and watched other people play games. So we wanted to do something that still recognized their effort.”

ASB members can agree that the reason for this event is recognize the student who are making an effort to keep their grades up. Senior and ASB member Alfredo Espinoza Pimentel believes this event motivate other students. “We’re going to have a good time today here at the event, and if they see that they will be encouraged and be like, ‘Oh. If I get my grades up, I could be there next time,’” Pimentel said.

ASB members can also agree that things didn’t go as they had planned out.

“This is not how I had it planned out,” senior and ASB officer Humberto Rojo said. “We were gonna have nicer food, other than pizza. And then we were going to have nicer tables, I imagined, like, table cloths, using the whole MPR not just half of it,” Rojo said. “But then plans just started to, like, change, and then some administration didn’t want to give us a lot of money for food, so we just had to work with what we had. So we ended up with pizza, and then we didn’t end up using the table because we didn’t know where they were at. And then, we had issues with getting the theatre, so we ended up with half and this is what we have now.”

With every Academic Idol Assembly comes its usual games.

Senior and participant, Guadalupe Zamora jokingly said, “It was pretty wack because I lost.”

Zamora expressed her concern as to why there weren’t as many people at the assembly as there usually are.

“The pep rallies for the 4.0 assemblies were always [fun], so we should have had something like that, I think that would have attracted more people…,” Zamora said.
