Every year on March 14, MoVal celebrates Pi Day. It’s a celebration for the mathematical constant π, or 3.14,which is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.

It was designated Pi Day to encourage students, schools and teachers to have appropriate activities to teach them about pi, and also to make them engage them to the study of mathematics overall.

Pi Day is celebrated worldwide in different ways. Many celebrations involve actual pie.

MVHS celebrates Pi Day annually during school. This year’s celebration, which fell on a bright, sunny day, was held outside in the I-wing parking lot.

“We’re celebrating the circumference of a circle in a fun way to celebrate math.” said Alejandra Valdes, a math club member.

Students came during their math class to play games set up by the math department and the math club for a chance to win some prizes and have fun.

The math club is one of the biggest parts of making Pi Day a successful event. “The math club puts it together, there’s little groups within the club and each one out there game booths together.” said Valdes.

Students work long and hard throughout the school year to make the event happen.

“The math club organizes this celebration since the beginning of the year but do not actually put it together until January, so there’s a lot of time to brainstorm.” said senior, Cynthia Garcia.

Many students were out during their math class celebrating Pi Day enjoying the games. They got to see the fun side of math and participate in several math-related activities.

“It was so much fun. I liked watching my teachers let loose and dance around,” said Jessica Avila, a senior who joined the festivities.
